ASTM B407 Incoloy 800H Seamless Pipe and Tube

ASTM B407 is the cover specification for seamless nickel-iron-chromium alloy pipe and tube, including Incoloy 800 (UNS N08800), Incoloy 800H (UNS N08810) and Incoloy 800HT (UNS N08811). Full Scope of ASTM B407

ASTM B407 covers the seamless wrought form of UNS N08800, N08810 and N08811 produced from solid bar or hollow billet by extrusion, plug-rolling or pilger-mill draw, with subsequent solution-anneal in the high-temperature 1149 deg C minimum cycle followed by rapid cool. The specification scope is the chemistry, mechanical properties, surface condition, dimensional tolerances and non-destructive test required to qualify the product for service. ASTM B407 does NOT cover design, weld procedure or installation; those are the responsibility of the construction code under which the pipe is used (ASME Section I, Section VIII, B31.1, B31.3 or equivalent national pressure-vessel code).

Dimensional Tolerances by NPS

ASTM B407 dimensional tolerances follow ASTM B829 (the general-requirements specification for nickel and nickel-alloy tubular products). Outside-diameter, wall-thickness and length tolerances vary with NPS and schedule. For NPS 1/2 inch through NPS 2 inch the OD tolerance is plus 0.41 mm minus 0.41 mm; for NPS 2-1/2 inch through NPS 4 inch the OD tolerance is plus 0.79 mm minus 0.79 mm. Wall thickness is plus 18 percent minus 12.5 percent across all sizes for hot-finished product. Length is supplied random 4 to 7 metres unless specific cut length is called for at order placement.

Non-Destructive Test Requirements

ASTM B407 requires either a hydrostatic test on each pipe or tube length per ASTM B829, OR a non-destructive electric test (eddy current per ASTM E309 or ultrasonic per ASTM E213) as a qualified alternative. Hydrostatic test pressure is calculated from the Barlow formula using 0.5 of specified minimum yield strength as the fibre stress, with the test held for not less than 5 seconds. Eddy-current acceptance is calibrated against a reference notch 12.5 percent of nominal wall thickness deep, longitudinal and transverse, on the OD surface. The mill test certificate records the chosen method, the test pressure or notch size, and the pass result.

ASME SB-407 Adoption

ASME Section II Part B publishes SB-407 as the boiler and pressure vessel code adoption of ASTM B407. SB-407 is the qualified source specification for Incoloy 800H / 800HT seamless pipe and tube used in ASME Section VIII Division 1 pressure vessels with maximum design temperature 815 deg C (1500 deg F). The corresponding ASME P-Number for welding-procedure qualification is P-No. 45.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What products does ASTM B407 cover?
ASTM B407 is the cover specification for seamless Ni-Fe-Cr alloy pipe and tube in UNS N08800 (Incoloy 800), N08810 (Incoloy 800H) and N08811 (Incoloy 800HT). It defines chemistry limits, mechanical floors, dimensional tolerances, hydrostatic test pressure, eddy-current inspection criteria and product marking for petrochemical furnace tubes, reformer pigtails, fired heater tubes and ASME Section VIII pressure-vessel piping.

Q. Is ASTM B407 adopted by ASME?
Yes. ASME Section II Part B publishes SB-407 as the boiler and pressure vessel code adoption of ASTM B407. SB-407 governs Incoloy 800H / 800HT seamless pipe and tube used in ASME Section VIII Division 1 vessels with maximum design temperature 815 deg C (1500 deg F).

Q. What is the latest revision of ASTM B407?
ASTM B407-23 is the most recent published revision. TorqBolt supplies material certified to the latest revision unless the purchase order specifies an earlier edition for legacy procurement frames.

Q. Does ASTM B407 require hydrostatic test on every length?
Yes. ASTM B407 mandates hydrostatic test on each pipe or tube length, or non-destructive electric test (eddy current or ultrasonic) as an approved alternative when the purchaser accepts. Hydrostatic test pressure follows the Barlow formula with 0.5 of specified minimum yield strength.

Q. Can ASTM B407 material be supplied with EN 10204 type 3.2?
Yes. TorqBolt supplies ASTM B407 Incoloy 800H seamless pipe and tube with EN 10204 type 3.1 by default and type 3.2 with Lloyds Register, DNV, BV, SGS or TUV witness on call-out for refinery, petrochemical and pressure-vessel procurement.
