Full Scope of ASTM B409

ASTM B409 covers flat-rolled product (plate, sheet, strip) in the UNS N08800 / N08810 / N08811 family produced from ingot by hot-rolling and, where required, cold-rolling. Solution-anneal in the high-temperature 1149 deg C minimum cycle followed by rapid cool is mandatory for the H and HT grades to develop the ASTM grain size 5 or coarser envelope. The specification distinguishes plate (4.75 mm and thicker), sheet (0.4 mm to 4.75 mm) and strip (similar thin gauges in coil form). ASTM B409 does NOT cover clad plate (covered by ASTM B898) or roll-bonded composites.

Plate, Sheet and Strip Tolerances

ASTM B409 dimensional tolerances follow ASTM B906 (the general-requirements specification for nickel-alloy flat-rolled product). Plate thickness tolerance for hot-rolled is plus / minus 5 percent or plus / minus 0.5 mm whichever is larger; width tolerance plus 6 mm minus 0 mm. Cold-rolled sheet thickness tolerance is plus / minus 8 percent of nominal. Length is supplied 2400 mm to 6000 mm random or cut-to-size on call-out. Flatness is 5 mm per metre maximum for plate up to 25 mm thickness.

Ultrasonic Test Requirements

Ultrasonic test per ASTM A578 acceptance Level B is mandatory on plate thicker than 19 mm intended for pressure-vessel service. The test detects internal lamination, porosity, slag inclusion and inclusion clustering that could cause delamination during cold-forming or service fatigue. Acceptance Level B permits no continuous indication longer than 75 mm and no group of three indications closer than 75 mm. The test certificate records the search-unit frequency, calibration reflector, and the pass result for each plate.

ASME SB-409 Adoption

ASME Section II Part B publishes SB-409 as the boiler and pressure vessel code adoption of ASTM B409. SB-409 is the qualified source specification for Incoloy 800H / 800HT plate, sheet and strip used in ASME Section VIII Division 1 pressure vessels with maximum design temperature 815 deg C (1500 deg F). The corresponding ASME P-Number for welding-procedure qualification is P-No. 45.

Surface Finish Options under ASTM B409

Hot-rolled plate is supplied in mill-scale (HRMS) or descaled-and-pickled (HRDP) condition. Cold-rolled sheet is supplied in 2D (dull cold-rolled with mill finish), 2B (cold-rolled annealed and skin-passed) or 2BA (bright-annealed) finish per the customer call-out. For pressure-vessel cladding and exchanger tube-sheet face surfaces, pickled-and-passivated (HRDP) is the default; for architectural and food-contact applications, 2B or 2BA brings the Ra below 0.5 micrometres for the wet-side service. TorqBolt supplies the finish required on the order line, with surface roughness verification supplied on call-out per ASME B46.1.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What products does ASTM B409 cover?
ASTM B409 is the cover specification for Ni-Fe-Cr alloy plate, sheet and strip in UNS N08800 (Incoloy 800), N08810 (Incoloy 800H) and N08811 (Incoloy 800HT). It governs chemistry limits, mechanical floors, dimensional tolerances and ultrasonic-test acceptance for hot-rolled and cold-rolled product used in pressure-vessel shells, fired-heater radiant panels and reformer convection bundles.

Q. Is ASTM B409 adopted by ASME?
Yes. ASME Section II Part B publishes SB-409 as the boiler and pressure vessel code adoption of ASTM B409. SB-409 is the qualified source specification for ASME Section VIII Division 1 pressure-vessel plate in Incoloy 800H / 800HT.

Q. What thickness ranges does ASTM B409 cover?
Plate covers 4.75 mm and thicker, sheet covers 0.4 mm to 4.75 mm and strip covers similar thin gauges in coil form. TorqBolt stocks Incoloy 800H plate from 4.75 mm to 100 mm and sheet from 0.4 mm to 4.75 mm.

Q. Does ASTM B409 require ultrasonic testing?
Ultrasonic test is mandatory on plate thicker than 19 mm to ASTM A578 acceptance Level B unless the purchaser specifies otherwise. Thinner plate, sheet and strip are tested by hydrostatic spread test and visual / dimensional inspection.

Q. Can ASTM B409 plate be supplied in solution-annealed condition?
Yes. TorqBolt supplies ASTM B409 Incoloy 800H plate in the solution-anneal high-temperature cycle (1149 deg C minimum, water quench or rapid air cool) required to develop ASTM grain size 5 or coarser for sustained creep service. This anneal is mandatory for the H and HT grades.
