Incoloy 800H Seamless Pipe

Incoloy 800H seamless pipe (UNS N08810, Werkstoff 1.4876) is supplied to ASTM B407 / ASME SB-407 in NPS 1/2 inch through 12 inch and schedules 10S through XXS, produced by the hot-pierce + cold-draw mill route at qualified Special Metals, VDM, Outokumpu and Sandvik sources. Solution annealed at 2050 deg F (1121 deg C) and quench-cooled to lock in ASTM grain size 5 or coarser, this is the canonical 800H seamless tubular product for ethylene cracker pigtail and outlet manifold piping, primary reformer tubes, fired-heater radiant-section piping, steam superheater tubing and ASME Section VIII pressure-vessel piping at design temperatures to 815 deg C (1500 deg F). Each length carries an EN 10204 type 3.1 mill certificate by default with heat-number chemistry to B407 ranges, solution-anneal cycle, room-temperature mechanical results, hydrostatic test record, and dimensional check to B407 paragraph 12. EN 10204 type 3.2 certification with third-party witness from Lloyds Register, DNV, BV, SGS or TUV is supplied on call-out.

Seamless Pipe Manufacturing Route

  1. Mill source verification: B407-qualified mill (Special Metals, VDM, Outokumpu, Sandvik). Verify mill 3.1 certificate, chemistry, heat-trace.
  2. Hot-pierce: Solid round billet (typically 200 to 350 mm OD) pre-heated to 1200 deg C and pierced over a mandrel on a Mannesmann piercing mill.
  3. Cold-draw + sizing: Pilger or cold-draw mill brings the pipe to final OD and wall.
  4. Solution anneal: 2050 deg F (1121 deg C) bright-anneal in hydrogen or dissociated ammonia atmosphere, quench-cool to maintain B407 grain-size requirement.
  5. Pickle + passivate: Nitric-hydrofluoric pickle removes scale, then passivation in dilute nitric acid restores the chromium-rich passive film.
  6. Hydro test: per B407 paragraph 14 at the lesser of 17.2 MPa (2500 psi) or the pressure that produces 60 percent of yield in the pipe wall.
  7. NDT: Eddy-current per ASTM E309 OR ultrasonic per ASTM E213 for full-length wall and longitudinal-flaw detection.
  8. Marking: ASTM B407, grade N08810, heat number, size, schedule, hydro-test stamp, mill mark, paint colour band per PFI ES-22.

Companion Forms and Spool Fabrication

800H seamless pipe is normally spooled with matching B16.5 flanges, B16.9 buttweld fittings (elbows, tees, reducers, caps) and joined with the qualified welding procedure (see weldability procedures). For applications that need a longitudinal seam-welded pipe (typically NPS 14 inch and above), see welded pipe per ASTM B514. For smaller-diameter heat-exchanger and boiler tubing, see seamless tube.

Seamless Pipe FAQ

Q. What is the maximum pipe size available in 800H seamless?
The practical seamless mill envelope tops out at NPS 12 inch (OD 323.9 mm). Above NPS 14 inch the pipe is supplied as longitudinally seam-welded per ASTM B514, with the seam welded by GTAW or SAW and 100 percent radiographed.

Q. What schedule should I specify for ethylene cracker outlet manifold piping?
Sch 40 is the typical default for the outlet manifold at design pressures of 4 to 6 bar; Sch 80 is specified on cracker units operating closer to 8 to 12 bar or on units where allowance for long-term oxidation thinning is built into the design. Both schedules sit comfortably within ASME B31.3 process-piping rules at the 815 deg C design allowable.

Q. Do you supply 800H pipe with PMI verification on every length?
Yes on call-out. Positive Material Identification (PMI) by handheld XRF per ASTM E1476 on every length is supplied on call-out and recorded on the EN 10204 certificate. PMI is typically specified for refinery / petrochemical projects per the project material verification programme.

Q. Can you supply 800H pipe pre-bevelled to ASME B16.25?
Yes. Standard practice is to ship pipe with plain ends and the fabricator bevels in the field. On call-out we can supply pipe pre-bevelled to ASME B16.25 figure 2 (30 deg V) with a 1.6 mm root face. Bevel adds approximately 1 week to lead time.

Q. What is the difference between ASTM B407 and ASTM A312 TP310 in high-temperature service?
TP310 / TP310H (UNS S31000 / S31009) is an iron-base austenitic stainless with 24 to 26 Cr and 19 to 22 Ni, qualified to about 815 deg C in non-carburising service. 800H (UNS N08810) is a nickel-iron-chromium alloy with 30 to 35 Ni, which gives substantially better carburisation resistance, higher creep strength at 815 deg C and a higher temperature ceiling. In carburising or strongly reducing service, 800H is preferred over TP310H.
