Incoloy 800H Flat Bar

Incoloy 800H flat bar (UNS N08810, Werkstoff 1.4876) is the rectangular-section wrought form of 800H supplied to ASTM B408 / ASME SB-408. Thickness 1/8 in (3 mm) through 2 in (50 mm), width 1/2 in (12 mm) through 12 in (305 mm), random lengths 3 to 6 m. Cold-rolled finish (default for thickness below 1/2 in) delivers a bright surface (Ra 0.4 to 0.8 micron) and tight thickness tolerance; hot-rolled finish (default above 1/2 in) carries pickled-and-shot-blasted surface and looser dimensional envelope. Edge condition supplied as mill, machined or ground per the order. Solution annealed at 2050 deg F (1121 deg C) and quench-cooled to grain size 5 or coarser per ASTM B408. EN 10204 type 3.1 mill certificate by default; type 3.2 third-party witness on call-out.

Edge Condition Options

  • Mill edge - as-rolled with mill-radius on the long edges. Default for hot-rolled bar above 1/2 in thickness. Cost-effective for structural use where edge condition is not critical.
  • Machined edge - long edges machined to square profile, perpendicular to the broad face within +/- 0.5 deg. For bracket and valve-body blanks where the edge is a reference surface for subsequent machining.
  • Ground edge - long edges precision-ground to square within +/- 0.1 deg and Ra 0.4 to 0.8 micron. For precision-machined parts and stamping dies where edge straightness is critical to the downstream operation.
  • Bevelled edge - long edges machined to a weld-prep bevel (typically 30 or 37.5 deg per ASME B16.25) on call-out for fabrication blanks that will be longitudinally welded.

Chemistry and Mechanical Properties

UNS N08810 chemistry per ASTM B408: Ni 30 to 35, Cr 19 to 23, Fe balance, C 0.05 to 0.10, Al 0.15 to 0.60, Ti 0.15 to 0.60, Al+Ti 0.30 to 1.20, Si 1.0 max, Mn 1.5 max, S 0.015 max, Cu 0.75 max. Solution-annealed properties: tensile 75 ksi (515 MPa) min, yield 30 ksi (205 MPa) min, elongation 30 percent min in 4D, hardness HRB 70 to 90, grain size ASTM 5 or coarser. Full chemistry detail and mechanical data.

Typical Applications

  • Bracket stock for reformer-tube hangers, fired-heater shell support and ethylene-cracker tube grid supports
  • Machined flat parts for valve bodies, manifold blocks and pump-shaft supports operating to 815 deg C
  • Valve body blanks for small-bore high-temperature isolation valves on reformer outlet lines
  • Stiffener strips for furnace-shell internal cladding and pressure-vessel reinforcement plates
  • Hanger and lug blanks for high-temperature suspension fittings on petrochemical heaters
  • Saddle blanks for pipe-support pads under reformer transfer lines
  • Backing strips for longitudinal welds on B514 welded pipe (where 800H backing is specified)
  • Spacer / shim stock in 1/8 in to 1/4 in thickness for thermal-growth compensation in fired-heater internals

Manufacturing and Inspection

  • Mill source - Special Metals, VDM, Outokumpu or ATI with verified 3.1 / 3.2 certificate
  • Hot-rolled or cold-rolled per the thickness range
  • Solution anneal 2050 deg F + water quench per ASTM B408 paragraph 7
  • Pickle + passivate on hot-rolled material to remove scale
  • Thickness / width verification by micrometer at both ends plus mid-length on every bar
  • Flatness check per ASTM B408 paragraph 8 - within 0.5 percent of width per metre length
  • Tensile + yield + elongation per ASTM A370 on coupon per heat lot
  • Hardness per ASTM E18 - HRB 70 to 90 in solution-annealed condition
  • Grain size per ASTM E112 - grade 5 or coarser acceptance
  • Ultrasonic per ASTM A388 on flat bar 25 mm and thicker
  • Heat number marking per ASTM B408 paragraph 12 with mill mark and paint colour band

Standards Reference and Companion Forms

Feedstock standard ASTM B408 / ASME SB-408. Plate (thickness above 4 mm in larger plan-view) is covered by ASTM B409 - flat bar above 2 in thickness moves into the plate envelope. For larger width or thickness see plate. For thinner sheet (below 3 mm) see sheet. Companion forms: round bar, hex bar, square bar. For ASME pressure-vessel use see ASME Section VIII.

Flat Bar FAQ

Q. What is the largest flat bar plan size you can supply?
Maximum supplied as flat bar - thickness 2 in (50 mm), width 12 in (305 mm), length 6 m. Above any of these dimensions the material is supplied as plate to ASTM B409 with the same chemistry and mechanical envelope. For width above 12 in or thickness above 2 in, specify plate on the order.

Q. Mill edge vs machined edge - which to specify?
Mill edge for structural and bracket stock where the edge is not a reference surface and a 1 to 2 mm radius rounded edge is acceptable. Machined edge for bracket blanks that will be welded to a perpendicular surface and the weld profile needs a square reference. Ground edge for precision-machined parts where the edge straightness drives the fit-up of the next operation.

Q. Can you supply flat bar with weld-prep bevels already machined?
Yes - 30 or 37.5 deg bevel per ASME B16.25 on call-out. Bevel angle, root face and gap are machined to the project welding-procedure specification. This saves the site fabricator a machining step on long flat-bar runs that will be longitudinally welded.

Q. Flatness tolerance - what is the standard?
Per ASTM B408 paragraph 8, flatness within 0.5 percent of width per metre length. For tight-tolerance applications (precision dies, stamping blanks), flatness within 0.2 percent is available on indent with a roller-level pass after solution anneal.
