Incoloy 800H Threaded Rod

Incoloy 800H threaded rod per ASTM B408 and ASME B1.1, UNS N08810
Incoloy 800H threaded rod per ASTM B408

Incoloy 800H threaded rod is continuous-thread rod stock cut to length, machined from ASTM B408 round bar for hanger construction, anchor extensions, field-assembled support brackets and high-temperature tensile-link applications to 815 deg C (1500 deg F). TorqBolt manufactures threaded rod in diameter range M12 to M48 (metric) and 1/2 inch to 1-7/8 inch (inch) with cut lengths from 100 mm up to 3000 mm in single pieces; longer assemblies are field-spliced with coupling nuts. The rod is fully threaded end-to-end with class 6g per ISO 965 (metric) or class 2A per ASME B1.1 (inch). Cut ends are chamfered for nut start. Every threaded rod ships with EN 10204 type 3.1 mill test certificate documenting heat number, ASTM B408 chemistry, solution-anneal cycle (1149 deg C plateau, rapid quench) and ASTM grain size 5 verification. Threaded rod is the standard hanger and support construction primitive for heat exchanger tube-bundle suspension, reformer pigtail support and pressure-vessel internal-tray support assemblies.

Manufacturing Route at TorqBolt

Threaded rod manufacture is a CNC turn-and-thread-roll operation on cut-to-length bar segments:

  1. Receive Incoloy 800H bar to ASTM B408; PMI verification on each heat.
  2. Cut bar to overall length per print on bandsaw with square-end finish both ends.
  3. Centerless grind shank to bar tolerance.
  4. Thread roll end-to-end in continuous pass: class 6g per ISO 965 (metric) or class 2A per ASME B1.1 (inch).
  5. Both ends chamfered for nut start.
  6. Solution anneal at 1149 deg C plateau followed by rapid quench; ASTM grain size 5 verified.
  7. Hardness band 120-184 HB on first piece and one per batch.
  8. Visual + dimensional + PMI inspection 100 percent; ring + plug gauge full-traverse.
  9. Bundle pack with VCI wrap; pack with matched hex nuts on PO call-out.

Inspection and Heat Marking

Threaded rod specific inspections cover end-to-end thread continuity, straightness and class 6g compliance:

  • Full-length thread verified with ring gauge full-traverse end-to-end.
  • Straightness checked to 0.5 mm per metre over full length.
  • Both-end chamfer integrity verified for nut start.
  • Hardness band 120-184 HB on first piece and one per batch.
  • ASTM E112 grain-size etch verification (grain size 5 or coarser).
  • PMI by X-ray fluorescence on first piece and one per batch.
  • Visual inspection for thread damage, surface defects and centerline run-out.
  • Heat number stamped on one end for traceability per ASTM B408.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Is threaded rod the same as ASTM A193 grade B7 stud rod?
No. ASTM A193 grade B7 is a chromium-molybdenum steel bolting grade. Incoloy 800H threaded rod is a separate nickel-iron-chromium alloy specified under ASTM B408. The certificate references B408 chemistry. Dimensional geometry matches ASME B1.1 thread schedule, not A193 chemistry.

Q. What is the maximum single-piece length?
Standard single-piece length is up to 3000 mm. Longer assemblies are supplied as field-spliced sections with coupling nuts for joint. The splice strength equals the rod strength when 1.5d minimum thread engagement is achieved on each rod end.

Q. Are inch sizes available?
Yes. Inch sizes 1/2 inch through 1-7/8 inch with class 2A UNC threads per ASME B1.1 are machined on PO call-out from the same B408 bar.

Q. Can threaded rod be cut to length in the field?
Yes. End-cuts in the field with cutoff saw or grinder require manual chamfer of the cut end to allow nut start. Field-cut ends do not invalidate the heat-certificate provided the heat number is preserved on the remaining length.

Q. What thread tolerance class is supplied?
Class 6g per ISO 965 default for metric supply. Class 2A per ASME B1.1 default for inch supply. Class 4g6g or 3A on PO call-out for high-precision assembly.
