AWS A5.14 ERNiCr-3 Welding Wire

AWS A5.14 classification ERNiCr-3 (UNS N06082, trade name Inconel Filler Metal 82) is the recommended filler for joining 800H to itself and to a wide range of high-temperature nickel and stainless alloys. Chemistry: Ni 67 min, Cr 18-22, Fe 3 max, Mn 2.5-3.5, Nb+Ta 2.0-3.0, Ti 0.75 max, C 0.10 max. The niobium addition stabilizes the weld pool against carbide precipitation; the higher Ni content vs the base metal compensates for dilution. Deposit tensile 80 ksi (550 MPa) min, elongation 30 percent min, bend test 180 deg without cracking. Where lower-chromium matching is required for low-temperature service, ERNiFeCr-1 (UNS N08825) is also supplied.

Welding Wire Forms Supplied

  • GTAW (TIG) bare rod - cut to 36 in (914 mm) length, OD 0.045 in to 1/8 in (1.15 to 3.18 mm). For manual root-pass and thin-section work.
  • GMAW (MIG) spool wire - OD 0.035 in to 0.062 in (0.89 to 1.57 mm), spool weights 25 lb to 55 lb. For semi-automatic deposition on thicker sections.
  • SAW (submerged-arc) coil - OD 1/16 in to 3/16 in (1.57 to 4.76 mm) with matching flux. For thick-section vessel cladding and reformer-header longitudinal welds.
  • Flux-cored arc wire (FCAW) - OD 0.045 in to 1/16 in. For out-of-position welding on fabrication sites.

Spring Wire and Mesh Applications

Cold-drawn 800H spring wire is supplied in tempers from annealed (HRB 70 to 90, tensile 75 ksi / 515 MPa) through 1/4 hard, 1/2 hard to full hard (tensile up to 145 ksi / 1000 MPa). Spring wire is wound into compression and extension springs for fired-heater dampers, reformer-tube hangers and high-temperature instrumentation. Woven-wire mesh from 800H wire is used in catalyst-bed support screens, demister pads and high-temperature filtration in petrochemical service. Cold-drawn finish is bright Ra 0.4 to 0.8 micron; oxidized finish on call-out for mesh applications where surface adherence is required.

Welding Procedure Guidance

For ERNiCr-3 welding of 800H base metal: preheat to ambient for sections below 25 mm; preheat to 100 deg C minimum for sections above 25 mm to drive off moisture. Interpass temperature held below 175 deg C to prevent grain growth and carbide precipitation in the heat-affected zone. Argon shielding 99.99 percent purity for GTAW; 75 Ar / 25 He on call-out for thicker sections to improve heat input. Post-weld heat treatment is not required for 800H below 25 mm thickness; for thicker pressure-vessel welds, solution anneal at 1850 deg F (1010 deg C) per ASME Section VIII appendix and the project welding-procedure specification. Carbide-stabilization heat treatment per ASTM B408 is supplied on call-out for sour-service welds.

Inspection and Certification

Welding wire is supplied with a heat-tagged spool / coil and an EN 10204 type 3.1 certificate per heat-lot. The certificate carries chemistry, tensile, elongation, bend-test result and a declaration of compliance with AWS A5.14 ERNiCr-3 (or ERNiFeCr-1 where specified). Spring wire is supplied with a temper certificate showing the cold-draw reduction, hardness and tensile per coil. Visual surface check per ASTM A484 - free of seams, slivers, scale and pickling residue. Diameter check by laser micrometer per coil. EN 10204 type 3.2 witness from Lloyds Register, DNV, BV, SGS or TUV on call-out.

Wire FAQ

Q. Why is ERNiCr-3 the matched filler for 800H and not ERNi-1?
ERNiCr-3 carries 18 to 22 percent chromium and 2 to 3 percent niobium - the chromium matches the 800H base and the niobium stabilizes the weld pool against carbide precipitation that would compromise high-temperature creep strength. ERNi-1 (pure nickel filler) is used only for clad-overlay and dissimilar-metal joints, not for matching 800H pressure-vessel welds.

Q. Can ERNiCr-3 wire be used for 800HT base metal as well?
Yes. 800HT (UNS N08811) is the higher-carbon, higher-creep-strength variant of 800H and shares the same Ni-Fe-Cr matrix. ERNiCr-3 is also the recommended filler for 800HT. For very high-temperature service above 1093 deg C (2000 deg F), specify ERNiCrMo-3 (Inconel 625 filler) for additional solid-solution strengthening.

Q. What is the shelf life of ERNiCr-3 spool wire?
Indefinite if stored sealed in dry conditions below 60 percent relative humidity. Once opened, the spool should be used within 6 months. Re-baking is not required for solid wire (unlike flux-cored or stick consumables). Visual inspection before use - reject any wire showing scale, pitting or surface oxidation.

Q. Can I cold-form 800H spring wire by hand or do I need post-form anneal?
Spring wire in 1/4 hard or 1/2 hard temper forms cleanly by hand or by spring-coiling machine without cracking. After forming, a stress-relief anneal at 1100 deg F (593 deg C) for 1 hour is recommended for service springs to remove residual cold work. Full solution anneal is not required and would destroy the spring temper.
